Mountain Story
"A son and his father were walking on the mountains.
Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
Curious, he yells: "Who are you?"
He receives the answer: "Who are you?"
And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!"
The voice answers: "I admire you!"
Angered at the response, he screams: "Coward!"
He receives the answer: "Coward!"
He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?"
The father smiles and says: "My son, pay attention."
Again the man screams: "You are a champion!"
The voice answers: "You are a champion!"
The boy is surprised, but does not understand.
Then the father explains: "People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE.
It gives you back everything you say or do.
Our life is simply a reflection of our actions.
If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart.
If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence.

This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life;
Life will give you back everything you have given to it."

YOUR LIFE IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. IT'S A REFLECTION OF YOU!"

The Farmer's Donkey

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.Finally he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

EAGLES IN A STORM

Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks?
The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it.
The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm.
When the storms of life come upon us - and all of us will experience them - we can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward God. The storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow God's power to lift us above them.
God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure and disappointment in our lives. We can soar above the storm.
Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them.

My mom only had one eye.  I hated her... she was such an embarrassment.

مادر من فقط یك چشم داشت . من از اون متنفر بودم ... اون همیشه مایه خجالت من بود

She cooked for students & teachers to support the family.

اون برای امرار معاش خانواده برای معلم ها و بچه مدرسه ای ها غذا می پخت

There was this one day during elementary school where my mom came to say hello to me.

یك روز اومده بود  دم در مدرسه كه به من سلام كنه و منو با خود به خونه ببره

I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me?

خیلی خجالت كشیدم . آخه اون چطور تونست این كار رو بامن بكنه ؟

I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out.

به روی خودم نیاوردم ، فقط با تنفر بهش یه نگاه كردم وفورا   از اونجا دور شدم

The next day at school one of my classmates said, "EEEE, your mom only has one eye!"

روز بعد یكی از همكلاسی ها منو مسخره كرد و گفت  هووو .. مامان تو فقط یك چشم داره

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear.

فقط دلم میخواست یك جوری خودم رو گم و گور كنم .  كاش زمین دهن وا میكرد و منو ..كاش مادرم  یه جوری گم و گور میشد...

So I confronted her that day and said, " If you're only gonna make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?!!!"

روز بعد بهش گفتم اگه واقعا میخوای منو شاد و خوشحال كنی چرا نمی میری ؟

My mom did not respond...

اون هیچ جوابی نداد....

I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger.

حتی یك لحظه هم راجع به حرفی كه زدم فكر نكردم ، چون خیلی عصبانی بودم .

I was oblivious to her feelings.

احساسات اون برای من هیچ اهمیتی نداشت

I wanted out of that house, and have nothing to do with her.

دلم میخواست از اون خونه برم و دیگه هیچ كاری با اون نداشته باشم

So I studied real hard, got a chance to go to Singapore to study.

سخت درس خوندم و موفق شدم برای ادامه تحصیل به سنگاپور برم

Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own.

اونجا ازدواج كردم ، واسه خودم خونه خریدم ، زن و بچه و زندگی...

I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts

از زندگی ، بچه ها و آسایشی كه داشتم خوشحال بودم

Then one day, my mother came to visit me.

تا اینكه یه روز مادرم اومد به دیدن من

She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.

اون سالها منو ندیده بود و همینطور نوه ها شو

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I yelled at her for coming over uninvited.

وقتی ایستاده بود دم در  بچه ها به اون خندیدند و من سرش داد كشیدم كه چرا خودش رو دعوت كرده كه بیاد اینجا  ، اونم  بی خبر

I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children!" GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!"

سرش داد زدم  ": چطور جرات كردی بیای به خونه من و بجه ها رو بترسونی؟!"  گم شو از اینجا! همین حالا

And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared out of sight.

اون به آرامی جواب داد : " اوه   خیلی معذرت میخوام مثل اینكه آدرس رو عوضی اومدم " و بعد فورا رفت واز نظر  ناپدید شد .

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house in Singapore .

یك روز یك دعوت نامه اومد در خونه من درسنگاپور برای شركت درجشن تجدید دیدار دانش آموزان مدرسه

So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip.

ولی من به همسرم به دروغ گفتم كه به یك سفر كاری میرم .

After the reunion, I went to the old shack just out of curiosity.

بعد از مراسم ، رفتم به اون كلبه قدیمی خودمون ؛ البته فقط از روی كنجكاوی .

My neighbors said that she is died.

همسایه ها گفتن كه اون مرده

I did not shed a single tear.

ولی من حتی یك قطره اشك هم نریختم

They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

اونا یك نامه به من دادند كه اون ازشون خواسته بود كه به من بدن

"My dearest son, I think of you all the time. I'm sorry that I came to Singapore and scared your children.

ای عزیزترین پسر من ، من همیشه به فكر تو بوده ام ، منو ببخش كه به خونت تو سنگاپور   اومدم و بچه ها تو ترسوندم ،

I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion.

خیلی خوشحال شدم وقتی شنیدم داری میآی اینجا

But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you.

ولی من ممكنه كه نتونم از جام بلند شم كه بیام تورو ببینم

I'm sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.

وقتی داشتی بزرگ میشدی از اینكه دائم باعث خجالت تو شدم خیلی متاسفم

You see........when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye.

آخه میدونی ... وقتی تو خیلی كوچیك بودی تو یه تصادف یك چشمت رو از دست دادی

As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with one eye.

به عنوان یك مادر نمی تونستم تحمل كنم و ببینم كه تو داری بزرگ میشی با یك چشم

So I gave you mine.

بنابراین چشم خودم رو دادم به تو

I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.

برای من اقتخار بود كه پسرم میتونست با اون چشم  به جای من دنیای جدید رو بطور كامل ببینه

With my love to you,

با همه عشق و علاقه من به تو

Out to Lunch

If someone is “out to lunch” it means that they are “clueless” or just “have no idea what they doing or thinking”.

So if someone is “ridiculously wrong and completely clueless about some topic, or many topics” we can say they are “out to lunch“.  It’s almost like their brain is taking a mental vacation or “lunch break”.

Examples

1.  Her husband is cheating on her and she has no idea at all.  She’s so out to lunch.  Its sad to watch.

2.  There is no way that little restaurant will succeed.  It is in a terrible location and almost no customers will find it.  The owner is really out to lunch.  I hate to say it but I’m guessing it will fail in 6 months or less.

No Brainer

This is a simple but very useful slang English term that native speakers use all the time.

If something is a “No brainer” it means that it’s a very easy decision“.  It means that you do not need to think hard about the choice at all because the proper decision should be so obvious.  A decision that is a “no brainer” should be common sense to any reasonable person.  Some examples will of course help.

1.  Let’s go to the Italian restaurant today because everything on the menu is half price for only today.  We can go to the other restaurant another day.  This is a no brainer.

2.  Why don’t you date Jamie instead of Kate?  Jamie is much more beautiful and she’s a lot friendlier as well.  It should be a real no brainer.

Ticking Time Bomb

This is an interesting term that native speakers often use.  It is “Ticking time bomb“.

A “ticking time bomb” basically means a situation that can happen at any time; something bad that will happen.  ”Ticking” is the sound of an old watch or an old clock.  Some “bombs” can be set with a clock or a timer to explode at a time.  If you didn’t make the bomb, you won’t know exactly when it will explode, but you know that it will explode at some point in time if nothing is done to stop it.

An example of how this phrase is actually used is something like this:

That man smokes too many cigarettes, drinks too much alcohol, eats too much junk food, and never exercises.  His doctor is worried about his heart and told him that he’s basically a ticking time bomb unless he changes his lifestyle.

- That means that basically he will get sick and/or die from heart problems sometime in the future unless he makes some healthy changes.

Another good example:

Many experts say that the economy is like a ticking time bomb.  It’s ok now but it’s going to fail badly sometime in the near future.  We just don’t know exactly when.

Off the Rack

This phrase is used when talking about buying clothes.

If you buy something “off the rack” it means that you are buying it directly from the store.  It means  that no one is making a special size made for you.

We all buy a lot of our clothing “off the rack”.  We always buy T-shirts off the rack, and in fact, we buy most of our clothes in this way.

The type of clothing that is sometimes not purchased “off the rack” would be things like men’s suits.  If you want a suit, pants, and button down shirt to fit you perfectly, it’s highly unlikely you will find this in a store.  Everyone’s shoulders are slightly different, chest size is different, pants length is different, etc.

When you get something like a suit, or a dress, made perfectly for your exact body, it is called getting “tailor made” clothing.

Sometimes, certain people will get quite lucky and find something that fits them almost perfectly “off the rack”.

Obviously, clothes that are purchased “off the rack” are generally less expensive than tailor made clothing because no person needs to make the clothes special for you.  But… It’s also true that clothes you buy “off the rack” will sometimes be extremely expensive because they are made from a very expensive brand.

Here is a little conversation to let you know how it’s used:

Tony:  Hey, nice looking suit.  Where did you get it made?

Mark:  I actually just bought it off the rack at a store I was walking past last week.

Going All Out

This is a great term in spoken English.  If you “go all out” it means that you put a 100% effort into something.  You tried your absolute best.  It doesn’t mean you succeeded, but it does mean you tried as hard as you possibly could.

Examples

1.  Our soccer team went all out yesterday.  We didn’t win, but the coach was still happy with us because of our effort.

2.  I am so tired because I went all out at the gym today.

3.  My foot is still hurting a little bit.  I will play basketball with you guys but I don’t think I’m going to be able to go all out.

4.  I went all out for Valentine’s day this year.  I bought my girlfriend nice flowers, took her to a fancy restaurant, and bought her diamond earrings.

Taking Things Out of Context

Taking something out of context” is a great phrase and it’s a bit of a “high level” phrase.  If you can use this well, you are really proving that your English kicks ass.

The “context” in which you say something is the situation in which you say it.  Context is things like where, when, to whom, what were the other factors going on when you said it.

When you take what someone said “out of context“, you are just saying a part of the story, usually to make the person look bad.  It doesn’t give the full story.

For example, if I said, “I am from Canada.  I love Canada in the summer time but I don’t like the cold winters.  I’ve been travelling around the world for the last few years and I’ve been really having a great time.  Sometimes I even wonder if I want to go back to Canada at all.  In reality, however, my family and friends are living there and I do want to see them when I am finished travelling.”

Someone who didn’t hear me say that whole story could tell someone that I said, “Sometimes I even wonder if I want to go back to Canada at all.”  While it is totally true that I said that, if you tell someone ONLY that part, then it gives them the wrong feeling of the story.  That would be totally taking what I said out of context.  It makes it sound like I don’t want to go back to Canada.  That would be untrue.  The real point was that I was having a great time travelling.

Unfortunately, our newspapers and TV stations in every country do this all the time.  We show the good stuff in our own country and show bad stuff in the other parts of the world.  We mislead people by taking things out of context and showing only part of the story.

Straight Laced

That means, I will try to make it useful (sweet) without writing too much.  If you can learn something new in a couple minutes.  GREAT!

Today’s phrase is “straight laced“.  It’s a very useful slang phrase and it’s used to describe a person.

If someone is “straight laced” it means that they are really “traditional”.  Someone who is “straight laced” would NEVER get a tattoo for example.  They probably won’t drink much alcohol.  They probably don’t party much.  They probably don’t like “dirty jokes”.  They are just a bit traditional and old fashioned.

It’s not always a bad thing to be straight laced, and often it can be a good thing.  It just depends how and when it’s used.

It simply means to be very traditional and to not do things that many people would think are too “open”.  I am sure you can imagine this type of person.

Do you think a straight laced person would jump out of an airplane or date 2 women at the same time?  NO WAY!  They are too “straight laced“!

Look the Other Way

If you “look the other way” it means that you “pretend that something didn’t happen” or you “pretend that you didn’t notice something”.  We often use this phrase with police officers or people who are in a position to get someone in trouble for something.  The following examples will certainly help!

1.  I know that policeman saw me driving WAY too fast.  He was nice enough to look the other way and not make me pay a fine.

2.  It’s illegal to drink alcohol if you are under 19 years old in certain countries.  Some countries are very strict about this, and some countries just tell their police officers to look the other way if they see it, just as long as the young person who is drinking is not causing any serious problems.

3.  My teacher definitely saw me cheating on my test, but he was too lazy to do anything about it so he just looked the other way so he didn’t have to make a big deal about it.  I’m a lucky guy

Off the Charts

If something is “off the charts” it means that it is too big to even measure, or “unusually large in some way”.

If a person weighs 250 kg, you could say that their weight is “off the charts“.  It’s “too big to measure” or “too big for a normal scale to measure”.

It doesn’t have to be ONLY about physical size either.  Anything that is FAR bigger or FAR smaller than normal is “off the charts“.

It can mean “great”, “terrible” or something else extreme.  The meaning is always obvious and it depends on the context of where it’s used.

Examples will certainly help give you a clear idea of how this is used in real spoken English.

1.  Her singing is amazing.  It’s off the charts.  (She is an unbelievably great singer)

2.  I can’t believe how stupid he is.  It’s just off the charts!  (He is very very stupid)

3.  His strength is off the charts.  He’s the strongest person I’ve ever seen.

Money talks! Saving money in English

Did you know that English can help you save money? The English language is full of advice on how to save for a rainy day. So if you are tired of penny-pinching, read on to learn the meaning of these useful expressions!

Penny-pinching. This expression means to save money, or describes someone who is unwilling to spend money. For example, I have to do some penny-pinching this month if I want to buy that coat!

A penny saved is a penny earned. This means that not spending money is almost the same as earning it because it will still be in your pocket!

The best things in life are free. A similar saying is Money isn't everything, in other words money can't buy the most important things in life, like love or friendship or health.

Saving for a rainy day means putting away money for the future, or saving for an emergency.

Penny wise, pound foolish. This expression describes a person who is extremely careful about spending small amounts of money, but careless when it comes to larger sums.

A fool and his money are soon parted. This proverb reminds us that foolish people do not know how to hold on to their money!

Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. This is a famous saying of Benjamin Franklin, meaning if you go to sleep early and wake up early you can get rich!

Money doesn't grow on trees. This expression means that money is not easily obtained. Parents frequently tell their children this if they constantly want to buy things!

Money talks. This is a modern expression which means that money is powerful, or that money makes things happen.

In for a penny, in for a pound. This proverb has come to mean that if you start something you may as well finish it, even if you have to devote much more effort than you expected. The original meaning was that if the punishment is the same, people will commit the offence which brings the greatest profit

Five Tips on Translating Poetry

Know the poet. If you are lucky enough to pick a living poet to translate, write to him or her. Get to know the person; ask him or her questions about the poem. What was the poet thinking when writing the poem? What does the poet think the poem means? Is there any imagery or language that is repeated? Is there anything symbolic from his or her life? What does the poet think of poetry? The more you know about the poet and his or her life, the better able you are to understand the nuances of the poem. Be courteous and grateful. The poet is answering your questions to help you with your translation

If, however, you choose a poet who has passed on, your job is a little harder. Try and find out as much as you can about the poet's life. Most countries have national writer's associations. If they don't, check the web and university libraries and language departments. Maybe from there you can find other people who knew the poet or can help guide you. Build as many contacts as you can. Be familiar with the poet and you will get a sense for the poem

Go for Grace. When you translate a poem, your job is to stay as close to the meaning as possible. That said, you also have artistic license to use (not abuse) the meaning to make a clear and graceful translation. Translating slag is an excellent example of when to use artistic license. Some slang has absolutely no meaning in another language. In fact, a direct translation would make the poem fail. In that case, turn the meaning of the slang into its equivalent. Remember, you want readers in your language to enjoy the poem, not marvel at how well you can directly translate words

Be Wary. This tip is for those of you who think translating takes a few minutes’ tops. There are some great computer programs that are designed for translation. There are also some excellent dictionaries and phrase books. But do not rely on them to give you the end-all-be-all translation. You must do the footwork. You can use these computer programs and dictionary translations as a guide. They may help get to the bones of the poem but your job is to put heart and live language on those bones

Take a Deep Breath. When you finish a translation, sit tight for a few days, maybe even a week, before you go over it. Take some time to think about something else, in your own language. Then come back and see where the gaps and the goodies are

Translating a poem is a lot like writing a poem yourself. You have to know what you want to say. You have to feel what you want to say. You have to be focused. There are a thousand other jobs that are easier, better paid, and eyesight-saving, but translating has its own glories. Putting poems into another language is one of the best ways to share culture, honor poets, and remind us that we can transcend geography. Do your best.
